What to Expect

You should expect to be treated with respect and instruction, mindful of the precautions necessary during these unprecedented times mandating social distancing and the wearing of protective masks.  You should expect to receive proper guidance on the safe operation of firearms. You should expect that your session will start on time, whether taking place at your home or at our office, that the course will expand upon the minimum taught by most other similar training classes and will focus on getting the participant comfortable with the materials covered.


Frequently Asked Questions

I don’t own any firearms; can I still participate?

Yes. Participants do not need to own a firearm or have any prior firearms experience to participate in a session. The goal of Sportsman’s Resource Training is acclimating those with little to no experience with firearms to the fundamentals of firearm safety and the basics of firearm use.

Do I need to have an FOID card to participate in your sessions?

No. A FOID card is not required for any NON-Live-Fire sessions but a FOID card IS required if you wish to rent a firearm at a local indoor gun range

Can you assist with securing a FOID or CCL?

Yes, Links are included to the Illinois State Police for both the Firearms Owner Identification Card as well as the Concealed Carry License applications. SRT is available to help you navigate the process and assist you with your application.

Can members of my immediate family sit in on sessions that I book or is each session restricted to just one person?

Yes. While all sessions are geared towards individual instruction, having your immediate family sit in on topics such as “Firearms Safety” or “Introduction to Firearms” is encouraged as these informative curriculums could be beneficial to everyone in the household.

Can group sessions be coordinated?

Yes. If you prefer to receive training in a group environment with friends or family, special accommodations can be made.

Are real/operational firearms used in the Non-Live-Fire training sessions?

No. All Non-Live-Fire training sessions utilize replicas and laser training guns. In some instances, real operational (but unloaded) firearms are brought as visual aids but if you prefer not to have any actual firearms present, you can request that as well.

Is real ammunition present in the Non-Live-Fire sessions?

No. “Dummy” or Training rounds are the only ammunition brought to any Non-Live-Fire session. You may request Live ammunition be brought as examples of cartridge types and sizes, but no live ammunition will be present when any real firearms are in the room and available.

What caliber of firearms are used for training sessions?

As recoil is often a concern for new shooters, Live-Fire sessions often start by using .22LR or 9mm ammunition for pistols, .22LR or .223 for rifles and 20ga or 12ga Low Recoil loads for shotguns. Sessions utilizing other calibers can be coordinated upon request.

What is the minimum age for participants?

SRT welcomes participants of all ages but participants under the age of 18 must provide written parental consent. Those seeking to apply for a Conceal Carry License must be at least 21 years of age. Sessions specifically geared towards youth can be arranged.

Is Ammunition provided with each Live-Fire session or do I need to secure my own ammunition?

Unless otherwise noted, ammunition required for all Live-Fire sessions are to be brought by the participants. If you have any difficulty in securing the ammunition needed for a session, simply let us know and we will assist.

Can you help me learn how to better use and care for my own firearm(s)?

Yes. One of the main goals of Sportsman’s Resource Training is to increase your comfort level and proficiency with firearms you own or are looking to procure.

Can you recommend accessories for firearms I already own or wish to purchase?

Yes. In most cases, we will have recommendations for upgrades, modifications or accessories and if we don’t, we will get back to you in short order.

Do you sell firearms and ammunition?

Is Sportsman’s Resource Training a Certified, Licensed, and Insured firearms instructor?

Yes. We are a NRA Certified instructor, approved by the Illinois State Police for its required curriculum, Licensed to do business in the State of Illinois and fully insured.

If I don’t wish to host the personalized training in my home, does Sportsman’s Resource Training have its own facility?

Yes. You may opt to have your sessions hosted at our office for all Non-Live-Fire training. For Live-Fire sessions, we have partner facilities, both indoor and outdoor, to provide a safe, private shooting experience.

How far will you travel?

Our rates are based on visits to homes or places of business in the Illinois counties of Cook, Lake and DuPage. We are happy to travel to other areas so please feel free to inquire about availability and any additional costs.

Is there any special gear or equipment I need to participate in the sessions?

No. Sportsman’s Resource Training will provide all the necessary tools to supplement your Non-Live-Fire sessions. For Live -Fire, you can either provide your own eye and ear protection or we can provide it for you. For specifics questions about suitable attire for Live-Fire sessions, please don’t hesitate to reach out to us directly.

I have specific goals in my firearms training, can custom programs be developed just for me?

Absolutely. Our wish is to develop a custom training program for each of our clients. Assess your knowledge and skill level, understand your goals and objectives, discuss any concerns or fears and then develop a training program to help you achieve your specific goals.
